Mitigating Side Effects During Titration

This module discusses the gradual process of introducing medicinal cannabis through titration—a method of administering medication at low doses and slowly increasing them to reach therapeutic levels without overwhelming the endocannabinoid system. The goal is to achieve symptom relief with minimal side effects by allowing the body to build tolerance. Side effects like drowsiness, nausea, and nervousness are often associated with THC and can be managed by adjusting dosages, extending the titration period, or increasing CBD intake. It’s emphasised that CBD plays a critical role in counteracting the psychoactive properties of THC, thereby ensuring patients don't experience euphoria, a common side effect. Patients are advised to maintain their conventional medication during titration until a stable dose of cannabis is found. In cases where patients do not respond to treatment, they may need to try different strains of cannabis as individual responses vary widely. The importance of patient-practitioner communication is highlighted to personalise treatment and manage any adverse effects.
